Faculty
Experimental Pathology Graduate Program (EPGP) faculty interests and expertise are diverse, including bacteriology, virology, vector biology and ecology, cell biology, genomics, immunobiology, vaccine development, and epidemiology. Faculty membership in the EPGP is based upon recommendations by the EPGP Director or nominations by current EPGP faculty members. Special consideration is given to faculty with an interest in disease mechanisms and the desire to contribute to graduate education and the EPGP. Appointments are reviewed and approved by the Curriculum and Academic Planning Committee and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. There are two levels of faculty appointments, full or associate member status, which is determined by the level of experience in graduate education and contributions in teaching, mentoring, and administration within the Program. Full members are approved to mentor students independently; associate members usually mentor students under the guidance of a full member. Currently, there are 55 EPGP faculty members; 39 with primary appointments in the Department of Pathology and 16 with primary appointments in other departments. Multidisciplinary and collaborative research is encouraged at UTMB and infectious disease research crosses many departmental and programmatic boundaries. Because of this overlap in faculty research interests, many UTMB faculty are members of multiple graduate programs; such is the case with many Experimental Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology Graduate Program faculty.
