It's Time to Wear Red for Women!
First Published 2/3/2012

Today is Wear Red for Women, you should be seeing lots of red today.  Please remember to take a group photograph of you and your co-workers who are wearing red and email the photograph to Valerie Brumfield’ (vcbrumfi@utmb.edu) so that a collage can be created for IMPACT.

Remember, it is important for men and women to understand cardiovascular disease, but because women are more likely to ignore symptoms, women are also more likely to die from it.  Be scared, be very scared and know your facts.  The more you know about cardiovascular disease, the more you can do to prevent it, respond to it ,and live long with it.

 Happy Wear Red Day!

Elevator Outage - Mandatory 5 Year Load Test
First Published 2/3/2012

February 2012 starts the next round of our required 5 year full load testing on campus elevators. This testing is mandated by TDLR ( Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation) and has to be completed in the month in which each unit is due. Fortunately in previous testing years the testing, was split up in various months to  allow time to perform the test and make any repairs created by testing , minimize the impact to building occupants and help keep cost to a minimum.

The testing will be scheduled and take place as to least impact everyone who could be affected. Some elevators will have to be tested after hours, some can be tested during the day or normal business hours and some will have to be tested on weekends. The schedule and testing times are driven by activities and the number of elevators that are available for use.

When performing a full load test, there is a potential to have repair issues. These repairs will be taken care of as they arise and the car will not be left until it passes the inspection. In addition, there will most likely be noises and unusual sounds related to the testing. The cars and equipment have to function and perform safely under the testing procedures . Once an inspection is completed, we will move onto a new elevator in that particular bank  or a new building.

A  schedule of which buildings are due in February will be sent. This schedule will include the building, elevator car, timeframe when testing will be performed and a potential completion date. The completion date will be dictated by passing the inspection and if any repairs are required. Building occupants will be notified of the testing , signage will be posted and any deviations from the schedule will be communicated.

Thank you for your cooperation in advance and please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or special requests.

Women professionals, share the excitement of your careers with 5th-8th grade girls!
First Published 1/27/2012

Volunteer to share information about your career and inspire the next generation at the upcoming STEM Career Explorations for Girls Conference on Saturday, April 28th on UTMB campus

The UTMB Office of Educational Outreach is currently recruiting women professionals to present workshops at the 2012 conference. The conference, funded by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will offer over 20 career exploration workshops presented by professionals in engineering, finance, biomedical health careers and other science/math/technology related fields. Over 150 girls are expected to attend and they are excited to learn from women role models.

The purpose of this program is to encourage young women to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Because of the professional demands of our information-based society, it is crucial that the United States continue to produce a workforce highly skilled in mathematics, engineering, science and technology. Current statistics indicate that the number of women who study advanced mathematics and science continues to lag in comparison with males. Consequently, because women study less mathematics and science in school, they are seriously underrepresented in careers involving math, engineering, science and technology.

Please join us in introducing STEM careers to the young women of our area. Both speakers and participants have found conference participation to be a very rewarding experience. To volunteer as a presenter, contact Dr. Michele Marquette in the UTMB Office of Educational Outreach/Science Education as below.

About Rural Health Care Track
The Rural Health Care Track (RHCT) provides opportunities that serve to expand existing curricular experiences that emphasize the practice of rural medicine throughout the 4 years of medical school.  Students choose a rural community where they will complete multiple clerkships and strive to learn about the characteristics of the community and to develop partnerships within it.  Upon identifying a health care challenge in the town, students will complete a project along with their community partner(s) to address/improve the focus of their choice. For additional information please view the website at:  http://meded.utmb.edu/orme/RHCT/.

FEBRUARY FACILITATOR WORKSHOPS
First Published 2/1/2012

Do you facilitate small teams?  Will you be facilitating a Problem-Based Learning Team?  Then these workshops are for you!

Are you interested in learning about Problem-Based Learning (PBL) or in developing your skills for facilitating student learning in small groups?  Do you teach in the medical school's Integrated Medical Curriculum (IMC)?  The Office of Educational Development offers a pair of workshops to prepare faculty for PBL and small-group work.

The Introduction to Problem-Based Learning Workshop introduces faculty new to Problem-Based Learning to this teaching/learning method and to the faculty role in PBL groups.  This workshop is highly recommended for all new IMC facilitators.  Other UTMB teachers are invited to participate as well.

The Small Group Facilitation Skills Workshop is designed to develop and enhance facilitation skills when working in small groups.  Faculty who attend the Introduction to Problem-Based Learning Workshop are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop since it will focus on applying and practicing key small-group facilitation skills.  Specific skills discussed and practiced include:  questioning skills, listening skills, reading nonverbal communication and giving and receiving feedback.  This workshop is beneficial to anyone wishing to enhance their facilitation skills within the PBL or other small-group formats.  New IMC facilitators should attend the Introduction to Problem-Based Learning Workshop prior to this class so they will already have a basic understanding of the PBL process.

If you are unable to attend the following workshops and will be facilitating an upcoming PBL group, please contact Oma Morey at ommorey@utmb.eduor ext 23233 to see about setting up a one-on-one training session.
